Tried & Tested AKT Deodorant

AKT deordorant review tried tested chic geek men's razor bestFounded by actors Andy Coxon and Ed Currie, who took AKT-ion launching their very own (now award-winning) natural deodorant brand when the West End industry was shut down in 2020.

Dedicating three years to research, development and formulation, collaborating with leading experts in fragrance and cosmetic science, with exacting standards and a whole heap of creativity, Andy and Ed immersed themselves into the world of deodorant. The diligent duo created an all-vegan, gender-neutral, natural, plastic-free deodorant brand - that is tested on performers, not animals.

The AKT London range currently consists of three natural deodorant balms – SC. 01 ORANGE GROVE, SC. 02 AFTER THUNDER and SC. 03 The ONSEN – as well as THE APPLICATOR and THE ASSISTANT tools.

TheChicGeek says, “A few of us - meaning me - got out of the habit of daily deodorant during lockdown and WFH. If anything is going to get you back in to it, and fill you with confidence, this is it. The brass applicator is a bit of an indulgent faff, but it certainly nice to handle and look at.

”I tried The Onsen, which features vetiver, lavandin and citrus, which all smell delicious. A pea-sized amount for each armpit is sufficient and this really does last all day. You almost don’t need anything other fragrance when wearing this. 'The Assistant could easily be used on all your tubed products.”

Moncler Launches First Men's Fragrance

Moncler Pour Homme fragrance men'sMoncler has unveiled its first-ever fragrances, Moncler Pour Homme and Moncler Pour Femme. The new fragrances are the latest in a long line of inspirational creations by the brand and a natural extension of a 360° lifestyle brand celebrated around the world for its heritage of mountain excellence.

Left - Moncler Pour Homme - 150ml - £170 exclusive to Selfridges

The fragrance duo shares a unique 'Mountain Woods' accord exclusive to Moncler. This warm, sophisticated woody element is a common DNA that evokes the pioneering spirit of the brand. Beyond this accord, each fragrance unveils an intrinsic blend of prestigious natural materials and unique accords formulated in the hands of perfumers Nisrine Grillié, Quentin Bisch, Antoine Maisondieu and Christophe Raynaud at Givaudan.

“The Mountain Woods accord is the common thread between the women’s and men’s fragrance. For its woody, outdoors feeling, we used cedarwood. For the stylish sophistication of the house, we worked with a saturation of amber. Together with Antoine Maisondieu, we added sandalwood for its comforting, creamy warmth.” says Nisrine Grillié.

Moncler Pour Homme is a woody aromatic fragrance created by perfumers Antoine Maisondieu and Christophe Raynaud. Said to capture the vibrant natural beauty of an alpine forest, the fragrance contains an unprecedented saturation of woody notes. Starting with the exclusive Alpine Green accord for Moncler that, combined with the energising freshness of clary sage, lifts the fragrance through a leafy expanse of mountain pines.

“Moncler Pour Homme is a deep-dive of woody notes – much more than any classic men’s fragrance. The Mountain Woods accord present in both fragrances is accentuated a lot more in Moncler Pour Homme. For Christophe Raynaud and I, the idea was to play that against the fresh, green element of the Alpine Green accord with aromatic touches of pine resin, sage and cypress. To that effect, Monler Pour Homme is very modern in the way that it has a long dry down – it doesn’t really follow the formal construction of a traditional perfume.” says Antoine Maisondieu.

The fragrance is showcased in a unique ‘borraccia’ flask-shaped bottle encircled with a ribbed silver case and cap – a utilitarian echo to Moncler’s mountaineering origins and the iconic quilted construction of a Moncler jacket. The Moncler Pour Homme bottle features a silver-dipped effect and an LED screen adorns the bottle of the rechargeable 150ml edition with an illuminated message panel customisable via a Bluetooth-powered smartphone app. This playful innovation allows you to write a personal note that appears in scrolling red letters across the bottle’s mirrored façade when activated by the Moncler logo-shaped push button in contrasting black.

TheChicGeek says, "The first Moncler fragrance was always going to be a fresh wood, naturally, conjuring up those snow covered pined peaks and crisp mountain air. The brand has grown to become one of the biggest and more desirable of the designer down coat brands, particularly its multitude of small designer collections under its Genius header. The LED bottle idea sounds fantastically fun, love the personalisation element, and also relates to Moncler's technical expertise."

Tried & Tested JOS Grooming Original Beard Serum

tried tested JOS grooming beard serumHairstylist Jos Gibson has nearly two decades’ of experience concepting, designing and teaching for fashion brands, runway shows and editorial. His career started at legendary haircare brand Vidal Sassoon in 90s Manchester, and by the 2000s, Jos had become a leader in mens’ grooming working with brands such as YMC, Sunspel, Fred Perry Japan and A.P.C.

Whilst working behind the scenes on editorials for menswear titles such as GQStyle and Fantastic Man, Jos noted the lack of skincare and beard products that worked well for men on set. He began to experiment with new ways of grooming and caring for the skin, hair and beard that became the precursors to his own range of products.

High- quality plant-based solutions are combined with a fragrance that evokes the Japanese concept of Shinrin-yoku or Forest bathing. The JOS Original Beard Serum uses a blend of wood oils, frankincense, cedar and Japanese hinoki cypress, paired with green ora of vetiver and thyme. These specially blended precious oils contain plant phytoncides which together create a unique anti-stress fragrance which is said to not only heals our mind and improves our immunity but connects us to the natural world.

Left - JOS - Original Beard Serum - 30ml - £16

TheChicGeek says, “I always say the easier something is to use, the more you’ll use, and this being in a roll-on format feels ingenious. While a simple idea, it feels faster and more portable than previous beard serums. You simply apply when the beard or facial hair is wet.

The fragrance is a traditional woody scent, but in the green glass you really do buy into his whole Japanese forest concept. It’s well priced, and you even get manly joss sticks using the same wood and plant oils thrown into your purchase at the moment. What’s not to love?”

Review

Left - Gallivant Perfumes - 30ml Eau de Parfum - £65

TheChicGeek says, “The Phileas Fogg of perfume, Nick Seward, has produced a travelogue of scent. From Tel Aviv to Brooklyn, each fragrance is a modern take on a place memory.

I was hoping ‘London’ was going to smell like the inside of a red telephone box. Ewww!

If I had to pick a favourite, I would say ‘Tokyo’. Created with Nicolas Bonneville, it is a zingy, spicy, wood. A citrusy head of bergamot and yuzu with black pepper and cardamom, is electrified with a dash of wasabi. A woody heart of hinoki, cedarwood, and incense with orris root, rose and nutmeg mixes with a base of amber, sandalwood, patchouli and vetiver.

Tokyo has a slightly treacly cola top with an aquatic freshness. The warmed incense is there, but it’s deep and kept light with the fruit.”

Tried & Tested Jimmy Choo Urban Hero

Review
Jimmy Choo Urban Hero best rated tried testedJimmy Choo new ‘Urban Hero’ “combines sophistication and sensitivity with a touch of rebellion, an artist at heart; the city at night his canvas.”

Jimmy Choo has cast renowned street artist Jules Dedet, aka L’Atlas, as the face of the fragrance. A woody aromatic designed for Jimmy Choo by Antoine Maisondieu and Marion Costero of Givaudan, it starts with lemon caviar and black pepper. The heart opens with rosewood and vetiver with a drydown of grey amber and leather.

”We wanted to create a modern urban signature, in order to capture the spontaneous nature of street art, using blends of colours and textures, the way that street artists do.” explain Antoine Maisondieu and Marion Costero.

Review
Jimmy Choo Urban Hero best rated tried tested

TheChicGeek says, “For some reason I had ‘Urban Decay’ in my head for the name of this fragrance. ‘Urban Hero’ isn’t quite so bad. You know how old ‘street art’ is when the artists start to look like somebody’s dad! L’Atlas - no? me neither - is giving Jimmy Choo some urban edge. (I can’t imagine this one getting messy on the railway sidings any evening soon).

This fragrance is about as edgy as a Jaffa Cake. It has a very safe set of masculine ingredients and, while nothing bad, it’s nothing we haven’t seen many times before. Mass fragrance brands need to start taking risks if they’re going to stand out from the crowd. Fragrance saturation is catching up on luxury brands and people aren’t as seduced by the designer name anymore.”

Review
Bespoke London Superdrug men's fragrance best rated tried testedBrand new and exclusively available at Superdrug, Bespoke London is a new collection men’s fragrances. One of four, ‘Fresh Citrus & Vetiver’ is said to be zesty notes of fresh ginger and mandarin with classic notes of vetiver, amber, musk and patchouli.

TheChicGeek says, “It’s always best to try a fragrance before you look at the price. It takes it back to what fragrance is really about, and this surprised me being under a tenner. Okay, so it doesn’t last long, but there nothing wrong with its fresh fougère - there are hints of lavender - appeal.

While the packaging and bottle is bland, it’s not really trying to be anything it is not. Which is good. This is the same quality you’ll find with the mainstream designer fragrances, and it’ll make you a cleverer consumer to get your everyday fragrance fix from something like this.

This is fast fragrance.”

Tried & Tested Creed Aventus Cologne

Review
Creed men's fragrance Aventus Cologne tried testedFollowing on from the hit Aventus fragrance, Aventus Cologne is said to be a fruity yet aromatic burst of ginger, mandarin and pink peppercorn, complemented by a heart of patchouli, sandalwood and vetiver. A leathery balsamic base of styrax, birch, musk and tonka bean.

TheChicGeek says, “Creed has become something of a cult, and looking at the prices, £155 for 50ml, they are certainly premium, even though they’ve managed to ingratiate themselves into the mainstream - John Lewis window anybody?

Colognes are usually lighter and easier to wear, and benefit from frequent reapplications. This is safe. No note really sticks its head above its tasteful parapet. Even the top, which usually dominates a cologne, doesn’t have much distinction and quickly disappears into a that soft and dry twiggy dry-down of vetiver. There’s nothing wrong with this, but if you’re investing, like here, I’d advise to demand more.”

Tried & Tested Guerlain L'Home Idéal Cool

Review
Guerlain men's fragrance cool L'Homme Idéal tried testedThe latest instalment of Guerlain’s L'Homme Idéal series, this ‘Cool’ release has ‘re-orchestrated’ the almond olfactory centre with coolness around three accords; the effervescence of top notes of bergamot and orange mingled with the freshness of mint. Patchouli and vetiver are the base notes.

TheChicGeek says, “This is the first of Guerlain’s L'Homme Idéal fragrances I’ve tried. (There are 4 in total). I’m not getting much of the almond centre, there's a slight warmed frangipane note when on the skin, but there’s plenty of the aquatic mint.

From the majority of mass fragrance brands this would be just another generic cool and fresh fragrance, but, Guerlain has a pedigree which takes it up a notch. While the name isn’t memorable - Ideal Home, anybody?! - and the fragrance isn’t very distinctive, it still has a decent quality for a reasonable price.

I really like the matt grey sides of the bottle and engineered top. It looks classy while in a pretty standard and classic shape. If you want something minty, fresh and easy for summer, then this could be it.”
