Summer and white go together like strawberries and cream. It has a timeless innocence that looks sporty and fresh. This is one of the few times where sport and style gel seamlessly. Masters of this look are the great tennis brands Lacoste and Fred Perry and also Ralph Lauren who kits out the entire Wimbledon tennis tournament in a Disney-fied retro collection of classic preppy attire. Tennis has always been one of the most stylish sports, all very gentlemanly - see Fred Perry playing below.
The thing I love most about this style is the knitwear, the off-white Aran sweaters are just so chic. They look great worn at dusk or wrapped Sloaney style around the shoulders. It always reminds me of that scene in the film 'Trading Places' when Dan Aykroyd arrives at the tennis club dressed like a pimp in a fur coat and fedora to ask his friends for help, they look at him shocked all dressed very preppy-uptown-WASP in their tennis gear with head bands and jumpers slung over their shoulders. This look has a massive dose of irony, but that's the point, have fun with it.
The polo-shirts and knitwear also allow you to get away with the shorts, socks and trainers. Pretend you've just come off court after giving a good thrashing. New balls please!
Note: This is high maintenance, the white has to pop and look fresh so no grubby or grass stained brights.
