Heritage footwear has become a whole sector of the men's footwear market. From the sturdy Clarks desert boot to the perennially popular brogue, men have continued to rediscover the classics of male footwear. Now Hush Puppies are returning with a little help from the Hemingway clan.
'Inspired by British Club Culture and Hush Puppies Iconic Heritage’, the HemingwayDesign Studio, the founders of the Red or Dead brand, are taking Hush Puppies back to its 50s roots. Created entirely in the finest Wolverine pigskin and suedes, the 'Quiff' style - pictured - takes inspiration from the Teddy Boy Classic – the Brothel Creeper. Featuring crepe, gum, stacked and bespoke coloured soles teamed with tonal fine suedes, contrast stitching, eyelets, lacing and authentic Hush Puppies design details, the new shoes feel like a vintage style rediscovered.
“Hush Puppies came to prominence in Britain at a time of great importance musically, as well as culturally, and is recognized as a staple of the late 50s Rock n’ Roll scene, as the shoe of choice throughout the Mod movement, and the essential footwear for the fashion conscious ‘lad’ of the 1980s. The AW’12 British Premium collection features 8 styles that take inspiration from the Teddy Boy classic – the Brothel Creeper, the Mod’s iconic Chelsea and Desert boots and the Casual‘s ultra cool suede loafer.” says designer Jack Hemingway. (Wayne Hemingway's son).
Did you know? Hush Puppies were introduced to the industry at the National Shoe Fair in Chicago in October 1957. By mid-1959 the company had produced its first million pairs and by 1963 one in ten adults in the United States owned a pair of Hush Puppies.
TheChicGeek Says "These Hush Puppies continue the trend for thicker soled shoes. Men have been playing with coloured and distinctive soles for a few seasons now and we've seen brands such as Underground lead the way in bringing the brothel creeper back to prominence. These are a great everyday shoe with a hint of vintage but a nod to the thicker sole trend. Plus they have the famous Hush Puppie comfort."
