'Nowhere Boy' is the directorial debut from artist Sam Taylor-Wood. It tells the story of a teenage John Lennon and his relationship with his depressive mother and strict aunt Mimi. This is the type of film that could easily go so wrong but Sam Taylor-Wood manages to pull it off without it being too twee or a pastiche. The B-word is never mentioned and the film is centred on the emotional turmoil of John's teenage years and the feelings of rejection from his mother. A star is born in lead Aaron Johnson who doesn't try to caricature Lennon. This is a believable and enjoyable insight into Lennon's life on the cusp of stardom.
