A Single Man - Chic Geek Thoughts

While a handsome film the crutch of the matter is 'A Single Man' is dull. There is no drama. It looks good but not Mad Men good. There is no energy to the proceedings. Colin Firth looks great but it is unbelievable that an Englishman would ever look that perfect even in the Sixties.

The clingy white shirt he wears has the starring role. The film, like a lot of high fashion imagery, is completely asexual, a tease that doesn't even do that very well. Naked men are shown but not really shown. They are shot in an American way, without gentalia, making them eunuchs which completely removes any hint of sexuality gay or straight.

Julianne Moore who is usually in her element in this 'era' - it was so over-styled the Sixties became a blur, it seems to be set in an unbelievably bleached time and place - turned into Patsy from AbFab. There was no depth to the plot or the characters. Everything is too perfect: the Mercedes, the Neutra House, the accessories. Maybe watch this one with the sound off, it may be more enjoyable.
