This season sees the return of the classic buttoned down Oxford shirt. If you buy only one shirt make it a slim-fitting, washed cotton, block coloured - white, pastel blue - Oxford. It looks great with or without a tie and adds a preppy neatness to your wardrobe. The Oxford shirt is formal without being too dressy and the thick cotton hugs the body nicely.
The Oxford shirt's buttoned-down collar originally started on the polo field, players fastened their collars to their shirts to stop it flapping in their faces while playing. John Brooks of Brooks Brothers saw this and took the idea back to New York adding the detail onto a shirt and the classic American staple was born in 1896.
