Don Draper isn't usually naked. Mad Men is after all about the suit, but strip that away and it becomes much more interesting.
The makers of Mad Men have gone to so much detail that they have even got Jon Hamm's body right. Last night's first 2 episodes of Season 5, showed Don shaving in front of the mirror. His body is healthy but it's not 'perfect', well, American television perfect. They have clearly asked Jon Hamm not to get a personal trainer or do too much gym.
His body isn't toned or particularly defined. He looks like the normal, average guy in the 60s who eats too much, works in an office and might do a bit of sport somewhere at the weekend; something we don't see on TV anymore.
His skin is sallow and chest hair unkempt, yet it took nothing away from Don himself. Today's 'attractive' American television male has to always be tanned and buff; the perfect and predictably boring Abercrombie billboard.
There was another scene last night, where he is laying in bed with his new wife, Megan, and his T-Shirt has moved to reveal his hairy belly. Don's dark body hair wouldn't usually be allowed on American television. Covered or waxed away to continue our society's obsession with the six-pack, it's almost a reverse of our previous attitudes. Now it's all on show as long as what is visible to deemed to be perfect. Don's 60s body is a reminder of a previous time when men were men and we didn't need overinflated, hollow muscle to look like one.
